All About Me :
After googling how to write a good 'about' section of a blog, I have composed the last 17 years of my life into three simple paragraphs... all written in the third person (to add a coolness factor.) Enjoy :)
Haley was born in Oakville, Ontario and for the first 10 years of her life moved city to city in surrounding areas. From one country's armpit to another, Haley's family moved from Orillia, Ontario to New Jersey. While in New Jersey, Haley found a love for singing and was able to explore this passion in an amazing school district with a driven music program. At 13, Haley and her lovely Mom Christine went on Haley's first mission trip to Nicaragua. Being moved by the thought of helping others as a job, young Haley decided that when she finished High School she would pursue a field of mission work.
Overtime, Haley's desire to help those who can't help themselves transposed over to life as a high school student. When moving back to Canada and looking to get involved in her new High School, Haley found two clubs called Equity and H.U.G.S. Equity looked to make the high school experience for everyone more inclusive and safe. H.U.G.S standing for humans understanding gender and sexuality and being a place of just that. Both clubs shaped Haley and gave her a better understanding of people. From these Tuesday and Wednesday meetings, she decided one day she wanted to be a high school teacher and shape the same type of impactful understanding on future students. This decision led her to defer her offer to McMaster University for fall of 2019.
Until then Haley will be spending 9 months away from home learning and growing alongside a group of young students in Parramos, Guatemala. In Guatemala all university education is free, if students are able to pass a prestigious test. Most underprivileged families do not have the means to send their students to private schools where the proper material is taught and allows the students to pass the test. This leaves the rich to get richer and the poor to stay poor. The goal of the school Haley will be teaching at is to have each student (all sponsored by someone in North America) to pass the test and get the free university education. Haley will be working with the students to learn not only basic english but new curriculum in English. Haley is starting to get uncomfortable with writing in the third person... I am so so fortunate to have this experience and cannot wait to have this blog as a guide through the year!
